We as humans have become so dependent on Wifi in home that we expect to have great connection anywhere we travel. Of course, that is not the case especially when traveling in different parts of Europe, Asia and rural America where strong Wifi is not as prevalent as one would think. GlocalMe fixes that problem by offering a global Sim-free Wifi hotspot with FREE roaming charges. This is a game changer for frequent travelers and those in places with spotty Wifi. We chatted with the GlocalMe team to learn more about their product and how they approached their crowdfunding campaign which has raised more than 100k to date!
1.Congratulations! Within 10 days your team had raised $80,000 more than your intended $20,000 minimum goal. You ended up with $167k, how does it feel?
As a startup, we were fully funded within one day. It doesn’t get much better than that. We are humbled by the amazing show of support, and excited to see how much further we will go. To us, this has also validated what we are trying to do here so much more than any other test of the market possibly could. To see such support rise up so quickly has a profound effect on the creators of a product.
2.Most crowdfunding campaigns on Kickstarter you see are 30 days in length. What made you and your team go for a longer campaign?
We know that campaigns that are 30 days or less typically have a higher successful rate. The reason we went with 45 days is to get even greater exposure for GlocalMe, and use this as a platform to educate an unfamiliar audience with what this technology can do. For most people, GlocalMe G2 or the Cloud SIM technology is an innovative but new concept. You can see there are almost 150 comments in our Kickstarters campaign, many of them asking basic questions about the nature of what we are doing. We value every comment, and would love to answer those questions raised by the backers. A longer campaign time allows us to do this better and help potential backers make an informed choice about contributing.
3.How long did you prepare prior for your campaign & what did that entail?
We prepared 3-4 months during the pre-launch phase of the campaign. But honestly, if we could’ve started over, we would’ve prepared for an even longer time beforehand, maybe up to 6 months. All the work we did this time around to generate positive PR and build lists of interested backers could have been even more effective with greater lead time before the actual launch of the campaign.
4.GlocalMe is primed to disrupt the whole telecom industry worldwide. It seems as if telecom companies provide minimum service while keeping prices rather high, especially while roaming. How has this older industry been able to get away with this for so long?
We would say it’s mainly due to the lack of competition and barriers for new players to enter the market.
Many years of operating in the markets have given these telecom companies expertise and patented technology that new players cannot easily replicate. Cloud SIM technology represents an entry point that new start-ups can finally use to gain a foothold against established competitors, and overcome the barriers put in place by telecom giants.
Economies of scale is another factor. New firms will find it difficult to compete because their average costs will be much higher for building telecom infrastructure from scratch. Our technology doesn’t require us to establish new infrastructures, but works more by integrating the existing ones.
There are also a few cases as well that the operators are protected or favored by the government. We can only hope these practices stop and that the doors to truly free market competition are cracked open a little further.
5.What made you and the team decide to go with Kickstarter over other crowdfunding platforms such as Indiegogo?
We put an enormous amount of planning into the overall approach of our campaign in the months leading up to launch. We conducted an online survey before we chose which crowdfunding platform was right for us, and found that Kickstarter is more suitable for our innovative products.
6.I travel often and in Europe I’ve used 3g hotspots with wavering success, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. What makes Glocalme a better product than what’s already on the market?
GlocalMe G2 not only provides 3G services, but also 4G. When turning on the devices, GlocalMe can identify the best network from multiple operators without charging the users any roaming fees. The smart user interface of the G2 allows users to manage data usage with more freedom and efficiency. In addition, it’s available for all types of devices and software.
There is simply no other device like it on the market.
7.What advice do you have for future crowdfunding entrepreneurs?
Most crowdfunding entrepreneurs already know that before the launch of your campaign, you need to set your goal, set your timeline, identify resources and position your product. Once your project goes live, there will be tons of opportunities to boost your campaign, and people will approach you with many promotional options. Every creator needs to carefully evaluate what kind of promotion is the most needed, cost-effective, and proven effective by others before you. It’s very easy to get overzealous and blow your entire marketing budget and all your time on strategies that will never give you a significant ROI.
Good luck to all the future crowdfunding entrepreneurs. We are rooting for you.
I would recommend all frequent travelers purchase a GlocalMe device. It will save you a ton of heartache and money on those roaming charges! You can preorder yours HERE.
