One of the biggest challenges crowdfunders face is getting people to actually see their campaign. That’s right, if you build it, in fact, they actually WON’T come. Getting your campaign in front of a targeted audience that would be interested in viewing your campaign let alone donating, is tough but definitely possible. A great way to get in front of thousands of potential backers is through leveraging the reach of social influencers.
Who Are Social Influencers?
Social influencers are people online who have large niche followings across their various social networks. They are able to gain a massive following mostly by engaging with their followers, posting relevant content, always providing value within a specific industry. One tweet, Facebook post or photo upload to Instagram will almost definitely drive thousands of people to your crowdfunding page. Each sector, whether from technology to fashion or culinary arts, music, etc., they each have their own respective social influencers and it’s up to you to find them. Below are a few tips on how you can find, interact and leverage social influencers to pump up and enhance your marketing efforts for your crowdfunding campaign.
Finding Social Influencers
We will pretend that we are launching a crowdfunding campaign for a “smart home” product. We want to find social influencers to share our product with their loyal following. First we’ll scour Twitter and search for a few hashtags (#smarthome #homeautomation #internetofthings #iot). All four of these tags relatively have something to do with the smart home. Within the search results you’ll be able to see which tweets were retweeted and favorited the most. Click the tweets to see who posted them …and here you will view their following. If they have a large following and seem to tweet quite often, they are considered “a social influencer.” Follow them and do a google search to find out more pertinent contact information. You’ll be able to find out if they blog, their email address and other social networks where they are active. Once you’ve found their criteria, insert it into an excel document which will enable you to keep track of each influencer’s information as illustrated below.
Contacting Social Influencers
Once you’ve found and sourced your influencers that you would like to contact, now it’s time to make it happen. Sending a cold email has a relatively small chance of being successful as popular bloggers and influencers receive tons of them weekly. Start interacting with your prospective influencers a few weeks in advance before you go in for the “ask” to share your campaign. If they are on Twitter you should be; retweeting, favoriting and commenting on their posts. If the social influencer you are targeting is a blogger, share their blog posts on Twitter and ‘@’ them to make them aware that you are sharing their content. On Facebook and Instagram you should ‘like’ and comment on articles or photos that they post.
Going In For The Ask
Now, on to the most exciting part. You’ve targeted your social influencers and have been interacting with the influencers whose contact and social information you’ve logged into your excel document. Now it’s time to contact them and ask them to share your crowdfunding campaign. See below for an example email template of how you can go in for the “ask.” Replace your information in the bolded section as shown below.
Social influencers have the power to supercharge your crowdfunding campaigns marketing efforts. By following the steps above, you have a great chance of acquiring and using social influencers to your advantage for your crowdfunding campaign.
